Redefining Strength – Mary Gboko’s Journey from Fear to Empowerment

When 18-year-old Mary Gboko fled her community during an attack, fear became her constant companion. “I used to wish I were a man,” she said, “so I could join the military and protect my people.”

Determined to feel powerful again, she started acting tough and intimidating others — believing that strength meant control. But CWIDI’s training on gender roles, leadership, and self-worth redefined what strength truly meant for her.

“I realized that women can also serve in the military, the navy, or even the air force,” she explained. “I don’t have to act like a man to be strong. I can be firm, disciplined, and respectful in my own way.”

The program also gave Mary vital knowledge about menstrual hygiene. Before, she believed pads should only be changed three times a day — now, she knows it depends on individual flow and that cleanliness prevents infection.

Beyond knowledge, Mary found friendship and belonging in CWIDI’s girls’ support group — a safe space to share, laugh, and learn. “Some girls I never imagined speaking to have now become my friends,” she said warmly. “We talk about our challenges and encourage one another to stay focused.”

Today, Mary stands tall as a role model in her camp — redefining strength not as dominance but as confidence, respect, and compassion.
